Dave Tulloch

Director of Foam Operations/ Bodyboarder

The man behind the company, Dave “Tully” Tulloch has been pouring countless hours into developing a bodyboard company with a difference. His guarantee is that every board produced at Funkshen is designed, manufactured, tested and sold by real bodyboarders in Australia! Fellow bodyboarder and Funkshen design assistant, “Bside”, finally has Tully answering the real questions…

So Tully, it’s been another big year for you. How’s the transition going from producing custom boards to stock boards?
Well, the transition was generally quite smooth considering we pretty much used the most requested features and dimensions from our customs and transferred them to our range of stockies. Customs will always be our little baby and what I enjoy the most, but having stockies allows a customer to grab a Funkshen there and then and get him in the water.

You seem to be establishing yourself as one of the main players in Australia. Are all the boards still handcrafted?
You had better believe it mate. As time consuming as it maybe, all our boards have the handcrafted seal of approval. We also have found a nice little gap in the market and the company is generally becoming more recognizable with a great reputation.

The Funkshen team has been getting bigger. Any new faces we should know about?
Yeah for sure, new kids on the block include Tom Wilson, Garth Macgregor,
Kim Feast, Sylve and George Ramsdale. All new guys ready to explode for Funkshen!

Custom boards seem to be more popular than ever, do you think this relates to the craziness going on in the water?
Pretty much, yeah. Bodyboarding has become a whole lot more technical in the water so it’s only natural that they are going to need the exact equipment to get them there.

With all this extra workload at the factory, can you still find the time to get in the water and test some new rides?
To be honest it is getting harder everyday to get wet but believe me, when the surf’s good I’m definitely not going to miss out! I haven’t been doing as many trips overseas as I would like, but I still surf locally all the time and have been spending a bit of time behind the ski lately as well which is great fun when it’s small and no banks around. Aside from that, golf and Pong take up any spare time I have.

You have decided to freshen up the Funkshen logos this year. Are you happy with the result?
Most certainly mate. The new logo is much more versatile than before and should attract some attention this year and for years to come. We are all about doing something different and designing our logo is no exception.

A big congrats on the success of Funkshen so far. Great to see crew supporting Aussie made products and an original company!
Cheers Burns, we are stoked so far on our progress mate and we send out a huge thanks to all the crew that have supported us to date and we can assure them that their support hasn’t gone unnoticed. Keep it up lads!
