The first comp of the MBA season got underway at Claytons beach in Mindarie
on Saturday the 28th of April. Competitors were greeted with clean bowly
chest to shoulder high wedges all day. This made for some tight competition
and an extremely high level of riding. There was an abundance of new faces
joining the club this year with a very strong presence of grommets that
shred. A total of $750 in cash and prizes was kindly donated by the clubs
sponsors Funkshen Bodybooards, Creatures of Leisure, EBB clothing and EBB
wetsuits.
A very keen bunch of 14s and under were demonstrating some solid spin/roll
combos with mature and confident style. In a close final it was Lewy
Finagen taking the honours in 1st place closely followed by Aiden Stampalia
who came close to landing an ARS earlier in the day.
The cream of the crop 16s and under were in for a tight battle, with all
heats being extremely tough. Eventual winner Alex Hasey performed welll all
day, scoring perfect 10s for the wave of the day in which he exited a
spitting barrel and completing a air reverse of the end bowl. Tom Seivwright
also surfed solidly throughout the day to come a deserved 2nd place.
The 18s and under division saw some exciting action with inverts and reverse
of the lips scoring well. Lane Stampalia landed some aggressive off the lip
reverses as did jack Tanner who managed to make 3 finals on the day. After a
early exit form the 16s division Harry Laut fought back with a great final
surf to take out the division.
The best surfing action was performed by the opens division guys with Peter
Rosser dominating all day with several inverts and managing to land a huge
ARS in the final to win convincingly. The backwash created some fun air
potential as found out by Dan Sture in the semi final managing to hit the
lip and backwash to pull off a massive tweaked invert.
The conditions were perfect for the Drop Knee fellas with spins, snaps and
floaters being pulled off in all the heats. Andy Grattidge was a level above
with amazing control and speed he scored two ten point rides with a big
carve on a set wave and a stylish floater on the inside being enough for him
to take out the win in his first MBA appearance. Kyle Black has been working
hard on his DK and it showed throughout the day with a deserved 2nd place.
